Big Budget Bollywood Sequels That Didn’t Become HITS:
Bollywood has recently banked on sequels to recreate magic at the box office. While some have managed to surpass expectations, others have faltered despite massive budgets, big names, and franchise popularity. Recent examples prove that star power and brand value are no longer enough to guarantee success.
Singham Again, directed by Rohit Shetty, carried the weight of Ajay Devgn’s iconic cop franchise. With a reported budget of over ₹325 crore and an ensemble cast including Kareena Kapoor Khan, Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Tiger Shroff, and Akshay Kumar, expectations were sky-high. However, the film managed around ₹235 crore nett, earning a Semi-Hit verdict. Compared to the Box Office Verdicts of Singham (2011) and Singham Returns (2014), this outing fell short.
Another recent case like that came with Housefull 5, featuring Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, and Abhishek Bachchan. Despite a whopping ₹250 crore budget, the film collected only ₹162 crore nett. Marked as Average, it broke the franchise’s golden streak, as the previous four films had all been clean hits.
The most shocking downfall was Son of Sardaar 2, starring Ajay Devgn, Ravi Kishan, and Mrunal Thakur. Made on an estimated ₹150 crore, it barely earned ₹40 crore nett, turning out to be a complete Disaster. Its predecessor, Son of Sardaar (2012), had at managed a Hit verdict despite big clash.
Lastly, War 2, touted as one of YRF’s biggest action spectacles, with Hrithik Roshan reprising his role alongside Jr. NTR, carried a massive ₹450 crore budget. Yet, the Hindi version is expected to collect only about ₹180 crore nett, rendering it a Flop. This is a sharp contrast to War (2019), which was a blockbuster.
These cases highlight a changing audience mindset—spectacle alone won’t suffice. As Bollywood invests in even bigger franchises, the question remains: will future sequels meet the same fate, or redefine success?
